Bugslock Mosquito Repellent Bands

These bands comes in really handy whenever I have to bring C out for outings to the gardens or farms. It really keeps the mosquitoes away and when I'm done using it, I can keep it in the aluminium ziplock pack and re-use it for the next outing. It can actually last longer than what's stated on the package. I don't use it often but it can be kept in the aluminium ziplock pack and even on the next ocassion when I use it for C, it's still very effective! Well that's usually weeks apart and the smell is still so strong. When I let C wears it, she doesn't get bitten at all but poor mummy gets all the bites ;) So yes it can last longer than 12 hours IMO.

I had enquiries about the Bugslock from other mummies. It's MADE IN KOREA as stated on the package not MADE IN CHINA! This is a product from Korea and naturally manufactured in Korea. If you receive one Made in China, well, think twice about using it. It might be an imitation. Bugslock packaging differs in different countries but they are all Made In Korea!

Let me see if I can post up the different packaging here....

There you go! The different packaging for different countries :) On the left, it is for sale in Korea, the middle packaging is for sale in Europe/US and on the right it is for sale in China. It should be stated on the back of the packaging that it is "MADE IN KOREA" not anywhere else. Hope the information is useful to you :)

~ Simmons Paw Paw Salve ~

~ How we got to know this product ~

Like I mentioned in my previous post, I did a research and 2 results came up with Paw Paw Ointment all NATURAL! Simmons Paw Paw Salve is pretty hard to find because it is sold at selected pharmacies only.

I have read in an Australian Forum that Simmons Paw Paw Salve is a great alternative to Lucas Papaw Ointment. Some say it has the same effect as Lucas Papaw Ointment and it contains no petrochemicals and only 100% vegetable ingredients!

51mg/g of fresh fermented paw paw, unguent Carica Papaya L. Salve base is a mix of of vegetable waxes, beeswax and oils (Rhus succedanea wax, glycerine, canola oil, hydrogenated castor oil, corn starch)

I just got in the 1st batch of Simmons Paw Paw Ointments. I'm still using it and testing out the effects. As far as I'm concern, its really good for nappy rash. C recently had some nappy rash (on & off) and I'm against putting neoderm for her. So I tried Simmons Paw Paw ointment. Next day, it's gone & her buttocks is as smooth as ever!

Will add in more comments later but for now, its great for nappy rash :)

Additional comments:
Other mummies gave me some feedback regarding Simmons Paw Paw Salve. They said they really like the texture and it is really great for eczema. It absorbs easily into the skin but still maintains the moisturization. Baby C2 has really bad rashes since his 1st month. His rashes are awfully bad. It's so red and inflamed that I'm worried that he may develop eczema if I don't do something about it! Yes here comes Simmons Paw Paw Salve to the rescue! After 1st application (1st day - 2x a day after cleaning his face with boiled water) , I do see a little results... it's less red. After 2nd application (2nd day) , wow... I can see some of his fair skin and definitely not inflamed anymore, slight redness. After 3rd application (3rd day), I do see significant difference! Now his rashes are reduced to a few spots here and there. His rashes are almost all gone by the 4th application (4th day).

Simmons Paw Paw Salve is great for all kinds of rashes - face rashes, arm rashes, leg rashes, neck rashes, nappy rash & eczema! Thumbs up for this product!

~ Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment with Calendula ~

~ How we got to know this product ~

After doing some research and found that Lucas Papaw Ointment had got a base of petroleum jelly in it, I thought to myself, this is a fantastic product but if others who are allergic to it and can't use it, it will be such a waste. So I went to search for Paw Paw ointment without petrochemicals in it. The search results came back with two finds namely Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment with Calendula & Simmons Paw Paw Salve. So I called my sister in Australia, "hey, have you seen these 2 products in the pharmacy?" She really went to search for it in the pharmacies during her lunch hour and told me they only carry Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment with Calendula and it's displayed next to Lucas Papaw Ointment! It's such a competitive market! She said "Hey, the packaging is really cool! Its looks way nicer than the Lucas one! If I'm a consumer, I would prefer to have the black cool tube in my handbag than the red "obiang" one!" Okay and that probably affected my decision in bringing it in!

This company does not hide their ingredients, they state them down very clearly on their packaging and they are 100% Petrochemical Free.
Ingredients: Fresh fermented paw paw - 48mg/gm, Calendula officinalis flower extract - 5%. The base of the ointment is a mix of of grapeseeed oil, beeswax, castor oil, shea butter fruit, coconut flavour and vitamin E (tocopherol).
What are Petrochemicals?
Petrochemicals are manufactured from crude petroleum, one of the most common petrochemicals found in skin care products is petrolatum, also known as petroleum jelly.
Why should petroleum jelly be avoided?
It is listed as a probable human carcinogen by the European Union (EU). It is banned in EU Cosmetics (unless very specific purification standards are met). It is commonly contaminated with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHS). PAHS are strongly linked to a wide variety of detrimental diseases. It tends to interfere with the body’s own natural moisturising mechanism, leading to dry skin and chapping.

Some asked me whats the difference between Lucas Papaw Ointment & Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment with Calendula?
First, Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment does not contain petroleum jelly. Its all natural.
Secondly, it contains Calendula. You know how people raved about California Calendula Cream? Well, this Paw Paw ointment contains the same Calendula found in California Calendula Cream. It is used to accelerate the healing of wounds, bruises, burns, grazes and minor skin infections. Scientific studies have shown Calendula to be antimicrobial and antiinflammatory! While Paw Paw is a much loved remedy for soothing bites, cuts, minor burns, dry skin, nappy rash and cracked nipples.
And lastly, Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment contains more Carica Papaya (48mg/gm) than Lucas Papaw Ointment (39mg/gm).

Read one website which asked "Why use chemically-laden lotions & potions when an entirely natural and effective remedy is available especially for cracked nipples as our babies comes in contact with your nipples!" It does makes sense especially mummies who are still breast feeding, please read the contents of the cream/ointment before applying on your nipples. Best if you could wash off the cream/ointment first before breastfeeding your baby.

From my personal experience, I love this product! If C has got mosquito bites, I would definitely apply Lucas Papaw Ointment then Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment! Doubling the effect! And I love the smell of Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment! C will ask me to put this Paw Paw ointment for her for no apparent reason. And you know what, when you apply this paw paw ointment on your legs & arms, not only will it moisturize the area, it helps prevent mosquitoes from coming close to you! I have tried and tested it out! I applied on C while I didn't apply for myself. C didnt get bitten at all the whole day at her grandparent's place but I got bitten a few times! Fed up, I went to apply the paw paw ointment on my bites. Well true enough, I didn't get bitten after that. You might think that it is probably a coincidence or probably they have bitten enough for the day! But I have tested it several times over a few days and the same thing happened! This doesn't work for Lucas Papaw Ointment & Simmons Paw Paw Salve.

Another incident to share... Once C's daddy went on a short trip to Bintan with us and he suffered a severe sunburn! My friend gave us Aloe Vera gel to apply! As we all know the effects of Aloe Vera gel, but unfortunately, it didn't helped much and my dear husband was in so much pain! Well, actually Aloe Vera gel doesn't help for both my husband and C. When C has got mosquito bites, initially I went to buy Aloe Vera gel to apply for her but it worsen the bites and became so inflammed that I chucked the Aloe Vera gel away for good! I applied Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw ointment on a small area on my husband's back just to try out the effects... GUESS WHAT?? The rest of the area became very red & painful and later flaked and peeled. The part where I applied Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment, was so moisturized and he said he didn't feel pain that area plus it didn't peel!!! Hey and what's more, his skin condition became very good!

I had this pimple which is huge and had been there for 2 days! Gosh... it was really painful. I thought to myself, since this paw paw ointment worked on my husband's back, I might as well use it on my pimple! OMG! The very next day, the pimple was gone! I have been using it whenever signs of pimples seems to be popping out especially when its time of the month!!! It really works wonders! I have been using this as my lipbalm as well... especially when sleeping in air-con room. Lips tend to be really dry... this really helps to moisturize and prevents dry lips!

Just a add on, we went for a play at Victoria Theatre, I've got bitten by a mozzie on my arm. It was really itchy! Luckily I had Pure Paw Paw with me. Applied it and it eased the itch! So now I can add that it eased the itch from mozzie bites :)

~ Lucas Papaw Ointment ~

How we got to know this product....

It started when C gets bitten by mosquitoes at her grandparents place. She reacts adversely to the mosquito bites. First it will become really swollen then it will become inflammed. We have brought her to see a PD but whatever creams she prescribed, it doesn't help... only the ANTI-ITCH cream which prevents her from scratching. But what I'm afraid of is, after she scratched her bites, she will put her fingers into her mouth and she will be consuming posion!!! So what I'll do is to wear a legwarmer on her arms to prevent her from scratching & also prevent the medicated creams from getting into her mouth.

When I brought C to her usual class at Busybuddies, this very nice caucasian lady told me to get Lucas Papaw Ointment. She said it works wonders. It helped with her boy's ezcema and she used it for every little thing. According to her, you can only get it at Tanglin area which I'm not very sure where it is. We went for a little short holiday in Perth and at Fremantle, we chanced upon Lucas Papaw Ointment & Simmons Paw Paw Salve. We took Lucas Papaw Ointment of course since it was much recommended. It was selling for A$5.95. We applied on C's mosquito bite and to our astonishment, it healed pretty fast. So out of curiousity, I tried applying on all her old scars since its like a miracle cream that works wonders! Over some time, her old scars faded but you have to be really patient & hardworking to keep applying it.

Then I started my research on the internet about Lucas Papaw Ointment.
Just to share some information on Lucas Papaw Ointment...

This website states its full ingredients as follows:
Active ingredients
Carica Papaya (39mg/gm), Glycerine, Potassium Sorbate as preservative (0.1mg/g)
Full ingredients
Fermented Fresh Paw Paw Fruit, Rhus Succedanea Wax, Glycerine, Canola Oil, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Beeswax, Corn Starch, Potassium. Petroleum jelly based.
You can also find some fantastic reviews on the website. My goodness, its selling for £4.00 not inclusive of shipping!

They even have a blog dedicated to it
Most of them said its a wonder ointment for lips & eyes area.
From my experience, its great for rashes, ezcema, cuts, mosquito bites & scars.
Wow! They actually compared it as a cheaper alternative to Elizabeth Arden 8 hr cream!

I have read somewhere but I can't seem to find back the link... Seems that because Lucas’ Papaw Ointment is registered with the TGA (the Therapeutic Goods of Australia), it only has to list the active ingredient (potassium sorbate) on the packaging. Most people, of course, don’t know this and just assume that the rest of the product is basically mushed-up pawpaw. Especially as so many health food stores sell the stuff. But it seems to contain a base of petroleum jelly, ingredient used in Vaseline? So if you know that your baby/toddler/children is allergic to this ingredient, please do not use it! It may cause an adverse reaction!

I extracted this out from this website:
"The base used in Lucas Papaw ointment is certified to be free of carcinogens. The ointment is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration as being fit for human use."
So this is safe? But on the safe side, I'd better warn others that it contains petroleum jelly so any one allergic to it, don't buy Lucas Papaw Ointment... Buy the next alternative which is Pure Paw Paw Ointment or Simmons Paw Paw Salve.

I remembered once, C was walking and she suddenly fell down. She scrapped her knees and it was so red & had some abrasions. Can tell its gonna bleed. First thing, she said, "Mummy put papaw cream"... Oh, I had my papaw ointments in my bag! Thank goodness! So I applied both Lucas Papaw Ointment & Pure Paw Paw Ointment on her knees. After an hour, it healed!!! No scars, no trace of her falling down and hurting herself!!! Till now, I'm not sure which one worked or maybe both worked at the same time??

More reviews on Lucas Papaw Ointment can be found here:

Add on (19th Nov 2008):
C had a mozzie bite near her right eye recently, the next day her whole right eye became swollen. Only Lucas Papaw Ointment helped to bring the swelling down! I have tried Pure Nutraceutical Paw Paw Ointment & Simmons Paw Paw Ointment but both didn't really helped except to ease the itch. I took some pictures of the swell, will post up later.
